Why do we have these traditions at weddings?

Why do we have hen and stag parties and where do they originate from?

We have hen and stag parties to celebrate the soon to be wedding and marriage, to send them on their way into married life. However, stag parties are thought to originate from Sparta, the ancient capital of the Laconia district in Greece. The first party was in the 5th century. The first hen parties happened in North Africa, Middle East and Asia.

Why do we throw confetti?

Confetti is a symbol of celebration, good luck, happiness and fertility. It shows a union of people who support the newlyweds during their wedding day. Flower girls throw confetti as they walk down the aisle before the bride, this symbolises fertility.

Why do we call it “tying the knot”?

The expression comes from a Celtic tradition. Couples had their hands tied; handfasting, hence tie the knot. It shows their coming together and forming a close bond.

Why do we have honeymoons?

This originates from the 5th century too. Back then, the husband would “kidnap” his wife after their wedding and take her somewhere where they won’t be interrupted by family, and he would impregnate her. Thankfully, honeymoons sound much more romantic nowadays.
